New Delhi: As the Rabi season begins across the country, farmers are preparing for potato cultivation. Generally, early-maturing potato varieties are sown between September and November. Experts say that if farmers choose the right variety and adopt proper techniques, they can earn bumper profits in a short period from potato farming.
According to Dr. N.C. Tripathi, an agriculture expert at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Niyamatpur, potato is rightly called the “King of Vegetables.” It is a fast-growing crop that provides quick financial returns to farmers. With year-round demand and widespread use — from daily cooking to chips and French fries — potato remains one of the most stable income sources for farmers.
Kufri Ashoka is an early-maturing potato variety, best suited for the Gangetic plains. The tubers are smooth, white, and uniform in shape. The plant grows up to 60–80 cm tall.
It matures in 70–80 days and yields around 40 tonnes per hectare, with an average yield of 290–310 quintals per hectare.
This variety is heat-tolerant, making it ideal for warmer regions. Kufri Surya potatoes are large and white-skinned and are widely used in chips and French fries production.
It matures within 75–80 days and gives an impressive yield of 300–350 quintals per hectare
Kufri Pukhraj is among India’s most popular potato varieties, contributing nearly 33% of the country’s total potato production. It performs best in cooler climates and matures in 70–90 days.
This variety offers the highest yield — up to 400–410 quintals per hectare. It is widely grown in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, West Bengal, and Assam.
Agriculture scientists recommend that farmers sow Kufri Ashoka, Kufri Surya, and Kufri Pukhraj varieties in November for the best yield potential. With proper irrigation, fertilizer management, and pest control, these varieties can ensure bumper production and excellent profits in the coming months.
