After Cyclone Motha, another powerful weather system is gearing up to impact the region. The deep depression over the Malacca Strait has intensified into a cyclonic storm named ‘Senyar’, according to the latest update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Cyclone Senyar to Make Landfall on Indonesia’s Coast Today

As per IMD, Cyclone Senyar will make landfall along the Indonesian coast on Wednesday afternoon. Over the past six hours, the system moved westward at a speed of around 10 kmph and has now strengthened into a full cyclonic storm.

The Malacca Strait is an important maritime route that connects the Andaman Sea of the northeastern Indian Ocean with the South China Sea. Increased cyclonic activity in this region has raised the risk of deteriorating weather conditions across nearby coastal areas.

Low-Pressure Area Also Formed Over Bay of Bengal

IMD further reported that a low-pressure area has developed over the southwest Bay of Bengal and the region near southern Sri Lanka. This system is likely to intensify into a depression in the coming days, potentially increasing rainfall activity across several southern states.

Rainfall Alert for Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh

With both weather systems becoming active, IMD has issued alerts for light to heavy rainfall in:

  • Andaman & Nicobar Islands
  • Tamil Nadu
  • Puducherry
  • Andhra Pradesh
  • Kerala

Cyclone Senyar is currently centred near the Malacca Strait and northeast Indonesia, and its impact is expected to continue for several more hours.

Cyclone Senyar to Remain Intense for the Next 24 Hours

According to the latest IMD bulletin, Cyclone Senyar will maintain its intensity for the next 24 hours. It is expected to cross the Indonesian coast on Wednesday, after which the system may move west-southwest and later curve eastward within the next 48 hours.

IMD warned that wind speeds may reach 70–90 kmph, posing threats to maritime activities and vulnerable coastal regions.

Schools and Colleges Shut in Tamil Nadu

Due to the adverse weather conditions, schools and colleges in several parts of Tamil Nadu remained closed on Tuesday. Similarly, in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, a warning has been issued for heavy to very heavy rainfall on 26 and 27 November.

Rainfall is expected to reduce from 28 November, and conditions are likely to normalize by 29 November.

Conclusion

Cyclone Senyar currently poses a serious threat to marine zones and coastal areas. Experts are closely monitoring its speed and trajectory. South India and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands are likely to experience strong winds and rainfall over the next few days. IMD has urged residents to remain vigilant and follow all guidelines issued by local authorities.
