Today, we bring you the inspiring journey of a farmer who earns ₹4 lakh annually just by making vermicompost from cow dung. Starting this business doesn’t require heavy investment – all you need is hard work and the right knowledge.
Chaudhary Laljibhai, a farmer from Hemantpura village, started producing vermicompost along with farming and today earns lakhs of rupees every year. Vermicompost is an organic fertilizer that enriches the soil and is eco-friendly. Its demand is growing rapidly, especially among horticulturists and organic farmers.
Vermicompost is an organic fertilizer prepared with the help of earthworms. It is made using cow dung, dry leaves, organic waste, and grass. This fertilizer improves soil health and enhances plant growth. The best part is – it’s completely natural, making crops safer and more productive.
According to Laljibhai, the first step is to prepare a bed. Dry leaves, grass, or waste is layered on the bed, followed by cooled and decomposed cow dung. Then earthworms are released onto the bed, and it is covered with straw to protect them from direct sunlight.
He shared that he sourced 20 kg of earthworms from Punjab, which can survive up to 45°C and produce high-quality compost.
Low Investment, High Returns:
Laljibhai began with 13 compost beds, with a total setup cost of around ₹60,000. Each bed requires about 2,000 kg of cow dung, which produces roughly 700 kg of vermicompost.
The market rate of this compost is around ₹350 to ₹400 per 50 kg bag. That means selling around 1,300 bags a year can result in a good annual income.
You Can Sell It Online Too:
You plan to start this business, marketing is key. Build connections with horticulturists, nursery owners, and fellow farmers. Additionally, you can also sell your compost on online platforms, through social media or e-commerce websites for wider reach.
