The harvesting of wheat and other Rabi crops has begun across the country. Farmers with access to irrigation facilities can opt for summer Moong and Urad cultivation. These crops not only offer higher profits but also enhance soil fertility, leading to better yields for the next crop. Moreover, a good harvest of these pulses can significantly boost farmers' income.

To maximize production, farmers must pay attention to crucial aspects such as seed treatment, fertilizer management, irrigation, and weed control. Let’s explore the key factors that farmers should consider for a successful summer Moong and Urad crop.

1. Selecting High-Yielding Seeds:

Farmers should opt for high-yielding, disease-resistant seed varieties to ensure better productivity and protection against common crop diseases.

Recommended varieties of summer Urad:

  • PDUS-1 (Basant Bahar), IPU 94-1 (Uttara), Pant Urad 19, Pant Urad 30, Pant Urad 31, Pant Urad 35
  • LU 391, Mash 479 (KUG 479), Mukundara Urad-2, Narendra Urad-1, Shekhar-1, Shekhar-2, Azad Urad-1
  • Kota Urad 3, Kota Urad 4, Indira Urad Pratham, UH-04-06

Recommended varieties of summer Moong:

  • Pusa Vaishakhi, Mohini, Pant Moong 1, ML 1, Sunaina, Jawahar 45, Krishna 11, Pant Moong 3, Amrit, Jawahar Moong-3

Many of these varieties are resistant to Yellow Mosaic Virus, a common threat to pulse crops.

2. Seed Treatment:

Proper seed treatment is essential for disease prevention and improved germination, leading to higher yields.

  • Treat seeds with 2-2.5 grams of Thiram and 1 gram of Carbendazim per kilogram.
  • Prepare a solution by heating 500 ml of clean water with 100 grams of jaggery and 2 grams of gum.
  • After cooling, mix Rhizobium culture (for 10 kg of seeds) and dry the seeds in the shade.
  • Using sulfur dust and phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) can also enhance crop growth.

3. Fertilizer Management:

Farmers should apply fertilizers based on soil test recommendations to ensure optimal nutrition for the crop.

  • Nitrogen: 15-20 kg/ha
  • Phosphorus: 40-50 kg/ha
  • Potash: 40 kg/ha
  • Sulfur: 20 kg/ha
  • Zinc Sulfate (if deficient): 15-20 kg/ha
  • Farmyard Manure: 5 tons/ha

Proper fertilizer application ensures healthy plant growth and a higher yield. These crops typically mature within two to two-and-a-half months.

4. Irrigation Management:

Summer Moong and Urad require limited irrigation, but timely watering is crucial for better yield.

  • Provide 3 to 4 irrigations during the crop cycle for optimal growth.
  • Over-irrigation can lead to excessive vegetative growth, negatively impacting yield.
  • Apply light irrigation as needed to maintain soil moisture and ensure healthy crop development.

5. Weed Control:

Weeds can significantly reduce crop yield, so effective weed management is essential.

  1. Perform the first weeding and hoeing after the first irrigation to remove weeds and improve soil aeration.
  2. Chemical Control:
    • Spray Alachlor (4 liters/ha) or Fluchloralin (2.22 liters/ha) to suppress weed growth.
    • Apply herbicide within 2-3 days of sowing to control weeds for 4-6 weeks.
  3. Conduct manual weeding 15-20 days after sowing to keep the field weed-free.

Summer Moong and Urad cultivation can be highly profitable for farmers as these short-duration crops improve soil fertility and generate substantial income. To achieve higher yields, farmers should focus on selecting improved varieties, seed treatment, balanced fertilization, proper irrigation, and effective weed control.

The Agriculture Department also provides technical support and subsidies to farmers. By taking advantage of government schemes, farmers can enhance their summer pulse production and maximize their earnings.
