Due to changing weather conditions, the risk of pests and diseases in vegetable crops has increased, causing significant distress to farmers. Considering these issues, the Bihar Agriculture Department has advised essential measures to protect vine crops from pests. It is crucial to safeguard vegetable crops from pests and diseases; otherwise, the entire harvest may be destroyed.

These Four Pests and Diseases Are Dangerous:

1. Red Pumpkin Beetle:

The red pumpkin beetle is a dangerous pest that affects vine crops. It can be identified by its orange back and black abdomen. This pest damages leaves, flowers, and young plants, while its larvae feed on plant roots.

Preventive Measures:

• Sprinkle ash on leaves in the morning.
• Collect and burn adult beetles.
• Spray Fenvalerate 0.4% at 25 kg per hectare.

2. Fruit Fly:

As temperatures rise, the threat of fruit flies in vine crops also increases. These flies are brown in color, and their larvae feed on the inner parts of fruits, causing crop damage.

Preventive Measures:

• Install 8-10 lifetime traps per hectare.
• Hang clay pots filled with jaggery, toddy, and two drops of insecticide at various spots. This will help eliminate fruit flies.

3. Powdery Mildew Disease:

This is a fungal disease that causes small white spots on leaves, which later develop into a powdery white coating, leading to plant drying.

Preventive Measures:

• Keep the field free from weeds.
• Spray Sulfur 80% soluble powder at 3 grams per liter of water.

4. Downy Mildew Disease:

This disease causes yellow spots on leaves, and a white fungal web appears underneath them. It dries out the leaves and stunts plant growth.

Preventive Measures:

• Keep the field free from weeds and crop residues.
• Spray Mancozeb 75% soluble powder at 2 grams per liter of water.

Essential Advice for Farmers: To protect vegetable crops from pests and diseases, farmers should use both organic and chemical control methods appropriately. Insecticides made from jaggery and toddy are highly effective as natural remedies. Additionally, regular monitoring of crops and timely spraying are necessary to maintain plant health and improve crop yield.
