Farmers in rural areas of Bhilwara district are increasingly adopting fish farming alongside traditional agriculture and animal husbandry. This business is proving to be highly profitable with minimal investment. To encourage rural participation in this sector, the Rajasthan government is actively promoting fish farming by offering up to 60% subsidy under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).

Government Subsidy for Fish Farming:

Under PMMSY, financial assistance is provided based on beneficiary categories:

  • SC/ST and women beneficiaries receive up to 60% subsidy.
  • General and OBC beneficiaries get up to 40% subsidy.

For example, if a 1-hectare pond is constructed, the total cost is approximately ₹11 lakh. The government provides:

  • ₹6.60 lakh subsidy for SC/ST and women beneficiaries.
  • ₹4.40 lakh subsidy for General and OBC beneficiaries.

For a 2-hectare pond, the subsidy amount doubles:

  • ₹13.20 lakh for SC/ST and women beneficiaries.
  • ₹8.80 lakh for General and OBC beneficiaries.

Pond Construction and Fish Farming Process:

Farmers must construct a 1-2 hectare pond on private land, typically 6 feet deep. Proper nitrate balance in water is crucial for fish health.

Once the pond is ready, farmers can breed high-demand fish varieties such as Katla, Rohu, and Mrigal, known for their fast growth and strong market demand.

How to Apply for the Subsidy?

To avail of the subsidy, applicants must apply online through the PMMSY portal using SSO ID or visit E-Mitra centers.

Step-by-Step Application Process:

  1. Log in to the PMMSY portal via SSO ID or visit an E-Mitra center.
  2. Fill out the application form and upload the required documents.
  3. The Fisheries Department will review the application and forward it to the Directorate in Jaipur.
  4. After approval, the beneficiary can begin pond construction.
  5. Once the pond is completed, submit Geo-Tagging Proof, and the subsidy amount will be credited directly to the beneficiary’s bank account.

Expected Earnings from Fish Farming:

A well-managed 1-hectare pond can generate an annual income of ₹1-2 lakh. A 2-hectare pond can yield ₹3-5 lakh per year, with potential earnings of ₹10 lakh or more with proper care and management.

Advantages of Fish Farming:

  • High Profit, Low Investment – A cost-effective alternative to traditional farming.
  • Government Financial Assistance – Reduces financial risk for farmers.
  • Consistent Market Demand – Ensures a stable source of income.
  • Minimal Resource Requirement – Requires only water management, quality feed, and proper care.
