Eating watermelon in summer not only refreshes you but also keeps your body hydrated. However, the biggest challenge while buying watermelon from the market is figuring out whether it’s sweet, juicy, and red inside—without cutting it. If you also struggle with this, don’t worry! Here are 5 easy tips to help you choose the perfect sweet watermelon every time.

1. Choose Watermelons with Yellow Spots:

Many people pick shiny, fully green watermelons thinking they are the best, but such watermelons are often unripe and not sweet inside. To identify a ripe watermelon, check the bottom where it rested on the ground. If you see a pale yellow or creamy-colored spot there, it means the watermelon is fully ripe.

2. Pick the Heavier Watermelon:

Watermelon is about 92% water, which makes it juicy and sweet. If you have two watermelons of similar size, pick the one that feels heavier. A heavier watermelon means more water content—hence, it’s juicier and sweeter.

3. Tap Test – A Deep Sound Means Sweetness:

Another way to check ripeness and sweetness is by tapping the watermelon gently. A ripe and sweet watermelon will produce a deep, resonant sound. If the sound is flat or dull, the watermelon might be unripe and bland.

4. Smell and Surface Check: A ripe watermelon gives off a mild sweet aroma. If you sniff the outer surface and notice a pleasant, sweet smell, it’s a good pick. Also, check the outer surface—it should not be overly shiny or smooth. A slightly rough or matte surface often indicates a sweeter fruit.

5. Don’t Go for the Biggest One: Many believe that bigger watermelons are sweeter, but that’s a myth. Small to medium-sized watermelons are usually sweeter and more flavorful. Larger ones may contain excess water, making their taste watery and less sweet.

Bonus Tip: Avoid Pre-Cut Watermelons:

Some vendors use injections to make cut watermelons appear red and sweet. These can be harmful to health. Always buy whole, uncut watermelons. Also, check for any punctures or needle marks which may indicate tampering.

If you keep these tips in mind while buying watermelons, you’ll always pick a sweet and juicy one that benefits your health during summer.
