IMD Issues Caution for Multiple States

Weather conditions across India have changed suddenly, and the impact of severe cold is now clearly visible. Due to the activation of a Western Disturbance, significant weather changes are being observed from the Himalayan regions to the plains.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), between 13 and 18 December, light rain and snowfall are likely in the Western Himalayan region, while cold wave conditions and dense fog are intensifying across northern, central, and eastern India.

Rainfall and Snowfall Expected in Hill States

As per IMD predictions, light snowfall is expected in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on 14 December. Temperatures in higher-altitude areas may drop further.

Due to the influence of the Western Disturbance, cold conditions are likely to intensify, potentially affecting daily life and transportation, especially in mountainous regions.

Rain and Showers in Andaman & Nicobar Islands

Weather conditions have also changed in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. IMD has predicted light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning until 14 December.

The department has advised local residents and fishermen to remain cautious.

Cold Wave Alert in Karnataka and Other States

IMD has warned that severe cold wave conditions may prevail in North Interior Karnataka until 15 December.

Cold conditions are also expected to intensify in:

  • South Interior Karnataka
  • Telangana
  • Odisha
  • Chhattisgarh

Additionally, central Maharashtra and the Vidarbha region may experience cold wave conditions, with minimum temperatures falling several degrees below normal.

Thick Fog Disrupts Normal Life

Dense to very dense fog has become a major concern in North India and Northeast India.

Affected States Include:

  • Punjab
  • Haryana
  • Uttar Pradesh
  • Himachal Pradesh
  • Assam
  • Meghalaya
  • Other northeastern states

In cities such as Amritsar, Kushinagar, Gorakhpur, and Ayodhya, visibility temporarily dropped to near zero, severely impacting road, rail, and air traffic.

Fog Likely to Intensify Until 17 December

IMD has stated that fog conditions may worsen between 13 and 17 December in eastern and western Uttar Pradesh.

This may disrupt rail, road, and aviation services. Travelers have been advised to exercise extreme caution.

Falling Temperatures in Delhi–NCR

Cold conditions are gradually intensifying in Delhi–NCR as well.

  • Recent maximum temperatures: 22–26°C
  • Minimum temperatures: 8–10°C

According to IMD, light to moderate fog is likely during morning hours between 13 and 15 December. Skies may remain partly cloudy during the day, with temperatures ranging between 23 and 25°C.

Temperatures Drop Below 5°C in Several Regions

Cold wave conditions have further intensified across several parts of the country.

  • Adampur (Punjab) recorded a minimum temperature of 3.6°C, the lowest among the plains
  • Temperatures fell below 5°C in parts of Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and Himalayan regions
