To strengthen the rural economy and increase farmers’ income, the Madhya Pradesh government is actively promoting livestock-based livelihoods. Under this effort, the state has announced a 50% subsidy on the purchase of Murrah buffaloes through the Mukhyamantri Dairy Plus Yojana. The scheme aims to generate employment for rural youth and boost the state’s dairy sector.
According to Veterinary Officer Dr. Anjana Manjhi:
The remaining cost is covered by the government as a subsidy.
A good-quality Murrah buffalo generally costs around ₹1 lakh, making this subsidy extremely beneficial for farmers looking to enter the dairy business. Murrah is one of India’s top milk-producing buffalo breeds, known for high yield and strong profitability.
Under the scheme, beneficiaries receive two high-quality Murrah buffaloes:
This ensures that milk production begins from day one and continues without interruption. The government also supplies six months of free fodder, reducing the initial cost burden on farmers.
Since the gestation period of a Murrah buffalo is about 10 months, the delivery schedule is arranged in such a way that farmers get a continuous milk supply.
Dr. Manjhi explains that the two buffaloes together can yield up to 20 litres of milk daily. With rising demand in the dairy sector, farmers and rural youth can generate steady monthly income through milk sales. For many families, this scheme opens a stable and profitable source of livelihood.
This scheme is not limited to farmers—any eligible citizen can apply.
The state government aims to strengthen rural income sources, support livestock farmers, and create self-employment opportunities for youth. With the rising demand for quality dairy products, the Mukhyamantri Dairy Plus Yojana is emerging as a promising initiative and a major step toward building an Aatmanirbhar (self-reliant) rural economy.
