Maize (corn) is one of the major crops of the Kharif season and is currently at the 10–12 day growth stage in many regions. Due to continuous rainfall and waterlogging in fields, pest infestation in maize crops has increased in several areas. A recent inspection by the Agriculture Department revealed a rapid spread of Fall Armyworm and Cutworm pests in maize fields.

To protect the crop, the department has advised farmers on essential pesticides and precautions that can help save their yields from severe damage.

1. Fall Armyworm Infestation in Maize Crops

Fall Armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) is a highly destructive pest for maize. It primarily damages the leaves, cobs, and stalks of the crop, leading to a significant drop in yield if not controlled in time.

Biological Control of Fall Armyworm:

  • Natural enemies like parasitic wasps and spiders can be used for eco-friendly control.
  • The use of Trichogramma cards is effective in destroying the pest’s eggs.

Chemical Control of Fall Armyworm:
The Agriculture Department has recommended the following insecticides:

  • Cypermethrin
  • Deltamethrin
  • Chlorpyrifos

Spraying these chemicals in the recommended dosage can help manage the infestation effectively.

Preventive Measures:

  1. Crop Rotation: Replacing maize with alternate crops breaks the pest’s lifecycle and reduces future attacks.
  2. Resistant Varieties: Sowing maize varieties that are resistant to Fall Armyworm can prevent widespread damage.

2. Cutworm Infestation and Control

Cutworm is another serious pest that cuts the growing parts of maize plants, especially during nighttime. It mainly damages the young whorls and cobs of the crop.

Control Measures Recommended by the Agriculture Department:

  • Thiamethoxam + Chlorantraniliprole
    • Dosage: 2.5 kg per acre
    • Method: Place 4–6 granules in the maize whorl (leaf funnel)
  • Flubendiamide 480 SC
    • Dosage: 60 ml per acre
    • Application: For foliar spray
  • Spinosad 45 SC
    • Dosage: 80 ml per acre
    • Application: Spray evenly across the field

3. Fungicide Recommendations for Maize and Soybean

To protect maize and soybean crops from fungal diseases, the department recommends the use of Tebuconazole + Sulfur:

  • Dosage: 400 grams per acre
  • Application: Mix with water and spray thoroughly on the crop

4. Expert Advice from Agricultural Officials

A senior team from the Agriculture Department participated in the field inspection, including:

  • SDO Agriculture: Rachna Patel
  • Assistant Director: Ramkrishna Mandloi
  • Senior Agriculture Development Officer: Sangeeta Dabar
  • Agriculture Extension Officer: Neha Barade
  • KVK Scientist: Dr. M.K. Bankolia

They advised farmers to promptly adopt the recommended pest control methods to prevent further crop damage.

Conclusion

Fall Armyworm and Cutworm can severely impact maize crops if not managed in time. By following the biological and chemical control measures advised by the Agriculture Department, farmers can safeguard their fields.

Moreover, implementing preventive strategies like crop rotation and sowing pest-resistant varieties can help reduce future infestations. Accurate and timely use of the recommended pesticides can significantly improve both the quality and yield of the maize crop.
