Formation of Makhana Board in Bihar:
The central government has taken a significant step toward the prosperity of Makhana farmers by establishing the Makhana Board in Bihar. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced this initiative in her budget speech, aiming to provide better opportunities and recognition to Makhana farmers. Bihar is India’s largest producer of Makhana, accounting for over 80% of the country’s total cultivation.
Scientists at the Makhana Research Center have developed an improved variety called Swarn Vaidehi, which offers higher yields and a shorter cultivation period. It is India's first Makhana variety that produces 1.5 times more yield than traditional seeds.
Ongoing Research on New Makhana Varieties:
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, during his recent visit to Bihar, personally interacted with Makhana farmers and even stepped into the ponds to understand their challenges. He has directed ICAR and research institutes to develop thornless Makhana seeds, which will further enhance productivity and ease harvesting for farmers.
Golden Opportunity for Bihar Farmers:
With the growing demand for Makhana and the high-yield Swarn Vaidehi variety, farmers in Bihar can achieve higher profits with lower input costs. Government initiatives and ongoing research are expected to boost the future of Makhana farming, making it even more profitable and sustainable.
