Government’s Major Initiative for the Homeless:

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PM Housing Scheme) aims to provide permanent housing to the homeless and economically weaker sections of society. Under this scheme, affordable housing is provided in both urban and rural areas, with government subsidies offered to beneficiaries.

Now, PM Awas Yojana 2.0 has been launched, and online applications are open. However, this time, the government has introduced some important changes to ensure that the benefits reach the truly needy. According to the new rules, certain individuals will no longer be eligible for the scheme.

Sons No Longer Eligible by Default:

Previously, both parents and their sons could avail of the benefits of PMAY within the same family. However, this provision has now been removed.

  • If parents have already benefited from the scheme, their sons will no longer be eligible.
  • Sons can only apply if their parents have not previously availed of the scheme.
  • Applicants must now submit a sworn affidavit confirming that their family has not received benefits from PMAY before.
  • Providing false information to obtain benefits could result in legal action and recovery proceedings by the government.

How Much Subsidy is Provided Under PM Awas Yojana?

PMAY provides different subsidy amounts based on the applicant’s location:

  1. Urban Areas: ₹2.67 lakh subsidy
  2. Rural Areas: ₹1.20 lakh subsidy
  3. Hilly & Remote Areas: ₹1.30 lakh subsidy
  4. Additional Assistance: ₹12,000 for toilet construction under the Swachh Bharat Mission

This amount is disbursed in three installments, offering additional support for rural beneficiaries.

Who is No Longer Eligible for PMAY?

The government has set new eligibility criteria, disqualifying the following individuals:

  1. Large Farmers: Those owning more than 2.5 acres of irrigated land or 11.5 acres of non-irrigated land.
  2. Government Employees: Families with a member in government service.
  3. Taxpayers & Business Owners: Those paying income tax or business tax.
  4. Existing Homeowners: Individuals who already own a permanent house.
  5. Vehicle Owners: Those who own a three-wheeler or four-wheeler.
  6. Farmers with Advanced Machinery: Those using mechanized agricultural equipment such as three- or four-wheeled tractors.

What Are the New Rules in PMAY 2.0?

  • The subsidy amount will now be registered in the name of the female head of the household or jointly in the name of the husband and wife.
  • Sons can apply only if their parents have never availed of the scheme, but they must submit an affidavit confirming this.

How Has the Verification Process Changed?

To prevent misuse and ensure that the benefits reach the rightful beneficiaries, the government has strengthened the verification process:

  1. Aadhaar Verification: The Aadhaar numbers of the applicant’s parents will be checked to confirm whether they have previously received PMAY benefits.
  2. Physical Verification: Government officials will conduct on-site property inspections to prevent fraudulent claims.

According to Anamika Saxena, an official from Doda district, “If parents have already received benefits from PMAY, their sons will no longer be eligible. However, if the parents have not benefited and the son owns land, he may be eligible based on other criteria.”

How to Apply for PM Awas Yojana 2.0?

Eligible individuals can easily apply online using their smartphones by following these steps:

  1. Download Mobile Apps – Install the ‘Awas Plus-2024 Survey’ and ‘Aadhaar Face ID App’ on your smartphone.
  2. One Application Per Mobile – Each mobile phone can be used for only one application.
  3. Aadhaar Number Mandatory – Aadhaar verification is compulsory while applying.

With these new rules and stricter verification, PMAY 2.0 ensures that housing benefits reach those who truly need them!
