In a major relief for farmers across Uttar Pradesh, the Central Government has approved significant amendments to the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY). Under the revised guidelines, crop damage caused by wild animals has now been brought under the insurance cover. In addition, waterlogging losses have also been included in the scheme.

With this decision, farmers will now be eligible for compensation not only for natural disasters but also for losses caused by wildlife attacks.

New Provision to Come Into Effect from Kharif 2026

The amended rules will be implemented from the Kharif season of 2026, benefiting millions of farmers across the state. Every year, farmers suffer substantial losses due to:

  • Wild boars
  • Nilgai (blue bull)
  • Wild deer

However, until now they were unable to claim compensation because such damage was not covered under the insurance scheme.

Agriculture Minister Surya Pratap Shahi Expresses Gratitude

Uttar Pradesh Agriculture Minister Surya Pratap Shahi welcomed the Centre’s decision, stating:

“This move will provide great relief to farmers whose crops have been destroyed repeatedly by wild animals. Now they will also receive compensation under the PM Fasal Bima Yojana.”

He further added that compensation will now be ensured for damages caused by:

  • Storms
  • Drought
  • Floods
  • Heavy rainfall
  • Wild animal attacks

Farmers Can File Claims Within 72 Hours

Farmers will be able to report crop damage within 72 hours.
The claim filing process includes:

  1. Logging into the Fasal Bima app
  2. Uploading geo-tagged photographs of the affected field
  3. Submitting the required details for claim processing

Additionally, the state government will identify affected regions and publish official lists, making the entire process more transparent.

Why This Decision Matters for Farmers

Crop loss due to wild animals has been a major issue in several states, especially in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh. Farmers in these regions have faced heavy financial setbacks year after year.

With the new provisions coming into effect, farmers can expect improved protection for their crops, reduced financial risk, and a more secure and profitable farming environment.
