With the Kharif sowing season approaching, the government has introduced a significant relief measure for farmers. To ensure timely access to high-quality seeds, both the central and state governments are offering subsidized seeds aimed at reducing input costs and boosting crop yields.
Under this initiative, the state government is providing a 50% subsidy on seeds of key Kharif crops such as paddy (rice), urad (black gram), arhar (pigeon pea), moong (green gram), and dhaincha. This allows farmers to purchase these seeds at half the original price, helping to lower cultivation costs and enhance production potential.
Previously, farmers had to pay the full seed cost upfront and wait several months for the subsidy to be credited to their bank accounts. Now, the government has implemented the "At-Source Subsidy" model, where farmers pay only 50% of the seed cost at purchase, and the subsidy is applied immediately.
Seeds are being distributed through state-run seed warehouses across various districts. The distribution follows a "first-come, first-served" policy. Farmers are therefore advised to visit their nearest government seed center as early as possible to secure their seeds.
| Crop | Original Price (₹/kg) | Subsidized Price (₹/kg) |
|---|---|---|
| Coarse Paddy | ₹44.88 | ₹22.44 |
| Fine Paddy | ₹45.09 | ₹22.54 |
| Basmati Paddy | ₹61.38 | ₹30.69 |
| Urad | ₹145.20 | ₹72.60 |
| Moong | ₹116.85 | ₹58.43 |
| Arhar | ₹171.42 | ₹85.71 |
| Dhaincha | ₹116.00 | ₹58.00 |
This scheme is exclusively available to registered farmers of Uttar Pradesh. To benefit, farmers must be registered on the Kisan Transparent Portal (https://agriculture.up.gov.in). It is also mandatory to carry an Aadhaar card while purchasing seeds. Each farmer can claim subsidized seeds for up to two hectares of agricultural land.
The primary objective is to provide farmers with certified, high-quality seeds to help achieve higher yields at lower costs. Along with increasing farmers’ incomes, better-quality seeds improve crop resistance to diseases, making farming more profitable and sustainable.
Farmers in Uttar Pradesh are strongly encouraged to collect their seeds from the nearest government seed warehouse as soon as possible. If not already registered on the Kisan Portal, they should complete the registration process immediately to ensure timely sowing and maximize the yield for the Kharif season.
